EXPECTATION

William Shakespeare wrote, “Expectation is the root of all heartache.”

Is there any situation in life where we don’t insert our unique set of expectations? We imagine circumstances and scenarios, interactions and conversations, reactions and outcomes. In reality, how often do these expectations lead to disappointment and disillusionment? Sure we all have dreams and goals for our future, but how much detail do we try to control ourselves and what do we leave for God?

The future is God’s domain. We don’t know what is coming. Do we trust God enough to leave the details to Him? In Psalms 5:3 King David tells us, “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.”

Dr. Vance Havner, a preacher for over 70 years, said, “Worry is like sitting in a rocking chair. It will give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere.”

Avoid expectation and Trade worry for prayer

God is faithful, all-knowing and loving. He can work out circumstances we haven’t even recognized, and if they involve another person, only God can change their heart and mind. Trade your worry for prayer and leave your expectations with God.

James 1:6-8, The Message: “If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.”

Proverbs 3:5-12, The Message: “Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life!”
