Affirmations Are a Powerful Tool

Affirmations

Affirmations are a powerful tool. One of the most touching scenes from the popular film, The Help, has Aibleen saying to little Mae Mobley, “You is smart. You is kind. You is important,” and the girl repeating those words with her. View the scene here.

Affirmations like these are a personal declaration that something is true. When you are trying to challenge negative thoughts or rewire your mindset, using affirmations can help. How about another movie reference: the next time you have a negative thought, wave your hand like a Jedi and say, “this is not the thought I am looking for.”

We all have different learning styles, and there are predominantly 4 styles: Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, and Kinaesthetic (i.e., hands on). Take advantage of your learning style by using professionally recommended techniques to improve your self-image and repel negative thoughts. For example, write in a journal, say affirmation statements out loud, try a new craft project, avoid viewing social media. Play to your strengths and stay away from what brings you down.

Being grounded in God gives stability to our baffling world. In contrast, people can be unreliable, messy, and disappoint us. Only God is sure and unchanging. Feeling His presence gives you a sense of strength or peace when you thought your reserves were all used up.

When you have a hard time believing in yourself, you can believe in God’s love and faithfulness. It may still be hard, but you will make it. Just one day at a time, it’s okay, keep going. Keep working with God and your self-care plan.

Start by saying a personalization of 2 Timothy 1:7: “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”

The Help is one of my favorite movies. Of all the verses, 2 Timothy 1:7 served as a turning point in my life. That one verse is like a Swiss army knife we can use to deal with all of life’s challenges.
