You know the little spinning circle on your computer screen? That has been my brain lately.
Recommended fixes for my computer by the tech guys include ending resource-heavy tasks or running system checks. Hmm. Sounds like some good advice.
Start with identifying resource-heavy tasks. I have always been a fixer. I want everyone to be happy and have always thought that if I was good enough, strong enough, whatever enough, then I could make everyone happy or, at least, know what to do to make them happy.
My brain begins to spin as I read how millions of people search Google for the word hope. Billy Graham’s organization tells me they hear from hundreds of people every day who feel worthless, numb themselves with drugs or alcohol, or get trapped by fear and anxiety. There is no way I can fix all that.
Perhaps I will try running system checks. Lately, I’ve focused on a lot of different things, and I realize I have gotten away from some of my best self-care practices. I get busy and skip meditation, neglect to refocus negative self-talk, and put off creating quiet time with God for myself.
I decided it is time to initiate what the tech guys call the restore health command. Here is how my mental processing progressed:
- When we feel connected to others, it lessens feelings of hopelessness. We no longer feel invisible when others accept us for who we are and understand our value. I have the power to instill these beliefs in every person I come in contact with. In being an encouragement, I can take part in efforts that promote contact and care for neglected people. Just sharing the connection and comfort I feel through my faith in God will bring the light of hope to dark minds.
- I can treat everyone with love and respect, even if I don’t agree with what they are saying. Seeing the value in every person and reaching out to those in trouble is achievable, as well as donating to outreach groups that supply goods and services to people and places beyond my access.
- By taking care of myself, I will be ready to care for others. My positive and hopeful outlook can be a beacon for those lost in the anger and negativity that permeates our media. When I am at my best, I can represent a different approach, viewpoint, or lifestyle that someone may search for.
- I can pray and believe in the power of prayer for those in struggle or torment. I pray they will come in contact with the help they need from a source they will accept.
After my reboot, my mental blue circle has stopped its continuous spinning. I’m processing faster and able to move on to my intended tasks for the day—encouraging you to love God, love people, and love the life God has given you! Never underestimate how important you are to the world around you.
Together we can change the world, one heart and mind at a time!
