What I love about God is that He is God. This seems like a obvious statement, but the concept is as vast as the galaxy.
Because God is God, we don’t have to be. This is true freedom. Like any freedom, it requires some work on our part to fully realize.
Because God is God, we are free from…
Worry. Worry doesn’t prepare you for, or stop, unexpected circumstances from happening. If we trust God with the future, we can have faith that He will be with us. He will give us the strength to deal with anything.
Fixing. People don’t need fixing, but they may need help. We can be present, listen*, encourage, cook, clean, buy food, babysit, you get the picture. We can help them mentally and physically, but only God is the fixer.
Judging. Yes, there is evil in the world, and God gives us discernment to try and avoid it. But judging people is a whole other matter, and this is God’s territory. We can disagree with someone’s choices or opinions, but we can do so respectfully. We may choose not to hang out with someone, but we don’t have to mistreat them.
Comparison. Our Creator made us in his image and placed us on this planet for a reason. If I try to be like someone else, then who will be me? We have roles to play where we are, now, with the people that surround us. You are irreplaceable!
Condemning. We don’t have to feel guilty, unworthy, uncomfortable, disqualified, or less valuable. And we shouldn’t make others feel this way. If when we mess up, Jesus made it possible for God to forgive us when we ask. How do I know? Because the Bible tells me so!
Control. We all like to feel like we have everything in order, under control. But in reality, we have limited control that is fleeting. When I learned about the Circle of Control in therapy, I realized this was something God has tried to convince me of many times: take care of me, do my best, and let God do the rest.
How much more wonderful life would be if we stopped trying to make it on our own and stopped trying to be God. What if we really trusted God to be God?
