Nothing is more American that a road trip! As the 50s experienced the development of the Interstate highway system and more people could afford automobiles, the ritual of the family road trip was born. According to the New York Times, in 1963, 85 percent of Americans vacationed by car.
Anyone remember Dinah Shore singing, See the USA in Your Chevrolet? Favorite childhood road trip memories include: staying at the Motor Lodge, stopping at Stuckey’s for snacks and kitschy souvenirs, singing along with the radio, and eating hamburgers at the drive-in. Along the way, convincing Dad to stop at the quirky roadside attraction advertised on 20 billboards in the last 50 miles.
Understandably, there has been a resurgence in the all American road trip. So, in keeping with our faith inspired theme, here are a few fun and informative destinations.
In Washington D.C., visit the Museum of the Bible. Of course, in D.C. there are tons of things to see. Head down to Charlotte, North Carolina, to see the inspiring Billy Graham Library. Head east to Kentucky, where you can experience the Creation Museum and, 40 minutes away, walk through a life-sized ark at the Ark Encounter.
