This multi-part series will illuminate your thoughts on self-care. We are not talking about being selfish, which is all mixed up in negative feelings and diminishes others. We are talking about Jesus-modeled, positive, and restorative self-care.
self-care begins in Your Head
Mostly, we will talk about the power of our minds, where most self-care issues and efforts originate. While care of our bodies and emotions seems to be emphasized on social media, we should begin our efforts to train and maintain our minds. This mental work will support a complete and balanced self-care package.
Balance Your Thoughts and Intentions
Jesus taught the key basics of self-care in the Bible. If we follow the ways of God, we can balance our thoughts and intentions. He helps us develop our mental, physical, and spiritual power for our benefit, and then we can serve others.
Jesus spoke about self-love, in Mark 12:31, as the second greatest commandment entwined with loving your neighbor, second only to loving the Lord with all your heart, soul, and mind.
He modeled self-care, taking time for:
- People: John 2:1-12, Jesus joyfully attends a wedding celebration and is sensitive to the needs of the family.
- Meals: Luke 5:27-31, Jesus frequently shared a meal with those he helped.
- Rest: Matthew 8:23-27, Jesus took a nap at what the Apostles considered a most inopportune time!
- Prayer: Mark 1:35, Jesus often went off by himself to pray.
If someone says you are being selfish in your self-care, check their motivation. Let go of shame and guilt because these are not from God.

Let’s use the power of God’s Word to illuminate our thoughts and free us in the practice of self-care.
Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
