Yay, you made it to another Friday! I hope you had a great week celebrating what makes you special. I hope you also took the time to journal about all the things for which you are grateful and all the special ways God showed up in your life.
As we continue to understand and search for our own unique purpose in the world, do you think you could define your purpose in just six words?
Six-word exercises are a fun way to focus on what is really important to you. There are many variations in using six words to describe your life: a memoir, a story, your mission or purpose.
My sister-in-law used this in her elementary school classroom as a way for her and the kids to get to know each other. My favorite was a boy who wrote, “Mac and cheese makes me smarter!”
Six-word exercises have only two rules: Use exactly six words and the words should be true of you.
An urban legend says someone challenged Ernest Hemingway to write a six-word short story. He wrote, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” There is a lot packed into those six words! Did your mind start imagining more to the story? Mine did!
Six-Word Examples
Some examples of six-word memoirs I found:
“Failure is the best success path.”
“This life is sweeter than fiction.”
“Born a farmer, died a teacher.”
Here is an example of a six-word mission statement written by Suze Orman, “People first, then money, then things.”
I wrote two versions of my purpose. I think I may be on the path to a transition because I can’t decide which I like better! Wait, who says I can’t have two?
- Writing to inspire and encourage faith.
- Trying new things to bless others.
Can we define God is six words?
“I am the Alpha and Omega.” (Revelation 1:8)
“Jesus is truth, way, and life.” (John 14:6)
“May God Bless and keep you.” (Numbers 6:24)
I encourage you to use this exercise to come up with your unique six-word purpose. Please share, I would love to read your ideas!
